Fervence has come a long way since the release of Ghost, the 2020 record called "emotionally laden and hard-hitting," and more recently, 2024's Realm // One, rated "9 out of 10," and praised for "breaking so many rules in metal." On Constructs, the quintet's Metal Blade debut, vocalist Stevie B. brings her unique brand of ethereal aggression to 11 dynamic songs that explore, both musically and lyrically, deeply personal experiences with life, death, emotion, and relationships.
Formed in Reno, NV in 2019 by guitarist Trent Odneal, Fervence is now based in Austin, Texas. They spent 2025 crafting their most fully realized songs to date, including "Zenith," "Ascension" and "Oculum," a track that draws inspiration from the grittiness in Deftones' self-titled album. The song offers a dark, abrasive, human feel while maintaining a cinematic undertone that's never overdone.
"Zenith" addresses the emotions around prolonged health struggles, and feeling like "being a prisoner in your own body," while the aggro "Ascension" offers up an aural dose of tumult, a fever dream with "a fleeting moment of reflection before is slips away, only to be pulled back into the chaos."
Writing songs post-Ghost, Odneal made a conscious effort to leave more space for the vocals to explore melodies and focused on composition, mood, song structure, and building up to big choruses. Produced by Odneal and guitarist Austin Bentley and mixed and mastered by Zack Ohren, Constructs features callbacks the Ghost' album, both inconspicuous and conspicuous.
"As we have grown together and individually so have our views on existence and the concepts discussed. Constructs," Odneal explains, "is a refinement of our ability to convey some of these thoughts in a more generally relatable way, while also adding a bit more insight on other tangential topics."
The title track, "Constructs," is a "concluding thought to a note that I wrote to myself that began when we did the Ghost LP," says guitarist Austin Bentley, "We all take different paths that shape who we are and who we eventually become. But those paths are just constructs of thought stored in memory," he says. "Some good, some terrible, but all of them contribute to the people we are now. Though these things can feel monumental or cosmically important while we're living through them, they always collapse in the end. We still die. We still disappear. We live, we learn, we die."
The album cover, 3D artwork by Billelis, captures lyrical themes, while standing on its own as an iconic work of art. "The idea that our identities, relationships, ambitions, and experiences, though beautiful, are ultimately constructs that eventually collapse was something we wanted reflected in the imagery itself," Bentley says. Like the songs themselves, the artwork brings an ominous and almost mythological quality to bear. Additionally, Fervence shot elaborate production videos for four key songs on the Constructs, further cementing the lineup's fully rounded artistic vision.
As a fan of Fervence, and with her former band recently ending, in 2022 Stevie took a gamble and approached Trent about trying out for vocals. It was a stroke of luck, as Fervence weren't even seeking a singer at the time. Fervence had been fronted by Bentley, who decided to move into a guitarist/writing role in the band, leaving an opening on the mic. Stevie's former band had been practicing across the hall, and after hanging out as pals in the rehearsal room a few times, "it was really easy to have her jump in, full swing, without really missing a step," Odneal explains. "Right off the bat, her presence and the way she commanded the crowd's attention and engagement just blew me away."
For her part, Stevie appreciates Fervence's family camaraderie, saying, "we accept and love each other for where and who they are, recognizing their strengths and weaknesses, and helping out in areas where the others need it. Each of us is willing to put all of our heart and souls into this. And Trent is the band dad and we are all his degenerate children!"
Fervence are a live force to be reckoned with, and look forward to extensive touring in 2026 and beyond in support of Constructs. The members are grateful to share this new music, with Odneal explaining that their "main goal has always been and will continue to be to create art and share human perspective," he says, concluding, "if we can add value to other people's existence, then we are accomplishing that goal."
